Tawny Cypress
Tawny Cypress is a television, film and theatre actress best known for her portrayal of Simone Deveaux in the science fiction television series Heroes and for her small but dramatic appearance in World Trade Center.
Tawny Cypress was born on 8th August 1976, in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Her distinctive looks are a product of African and Native American ancestry on her father's side and Hungarian and German ancestry on her mother's. Her older brother, Toby Cypress, went on to become an acclaimed comics artist, and was a role model for her throughout her youth. A diligent student, she won a place at Boston University and later attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton. Pursuing an interest in acting, she went on to perform with the Mason Gross community at Rutgers University, subsequently developing her craft with the help of accomplished tutor and sometime Broadway star Barbara Marchant. She also studied at the William Esper Studio to refine the technical aspects of her work.
Cypress' acting début came in Jonah Kaplan's 1999 short film Stalker Guilt Syndrome, alongside Micheline Auger. After graduating from Boston University, she began to appear in stage plays and to take on small television roles to earn money and raise her industry profile. An appearance in NYPB Blue, with Dennis Franz and Gordon Clapp, won just the kind of attention she was looking for, and she went on to star opposite Richard Gere and Winona Ryder in Joan Chen's feature film début Autumn in New York. This led to a regular role in Sidney Lumet's 100 Centre Street. After this she made cameo appearances in Hack (with Donna Murphy and Jonathon Ruckman) and Law and Order: Criminal Intent (with Steven Zirnkilton and Jamey Sheridan) before securing another ongoing part in the popular soap opera All My Children. She also made regular appearances in Third Watch as Assistant District Attorney Sharon Burns, and further explored her interest in the crime genre with the 2005 series Jonny Zero.
On September 11th, 2001, Cypress watched the World Trade Center disaster unfold from the roof of her New York City apartment block. It was an event that shook her deeply, so when she heard that Oliver Stone planned to make a film about it she immediately got in touch and they arranged to meet. Though he was ultimately unable to find a major role for her, Stone gave her the small but pivotal part of a bleeding woman staggering out of the wreckage. It was a powerful moment, which helped her to deal with her feelings about the event, as well as getting her noticed in Hollywood. She subsequently starred as a restaurant owner opposite Eduardo Verástegui and Tammy Blanchard in Alejandro Gomez Monteverde's Bella.
Cypress is currently starring in Heroes, a series about ordinary people who wake up one day to discover that they have extraordinary powers. She plays an heiress and art dealer whose drug-addicted artist lover can paint the future. The series has attracted a cult following due to its science fiction and mystery elements. Though she has recently signed on for another season, Cypress also hopes to expand her feature film career.
In 2000 Cypress married Bill Charles, but the marriage ended in divorce four years later. She now lives with her daughter in NYC. |
