Ted Turner was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 19^th 1938 as the son of a successful business man who committed suicide and left his billboard business to Ted. At the age of twenty four Ted took over the ‘Turner Outdoor Advertising’ business which in 1963 was worth in the region of one million dollars. Using his entrepreneur skills he purchased Atlanta UHF station in 1970 and it was from there on that he had a vision for the concept of the superstation in cable television which would revolutionize news media.Turner attended a private preparatory school, McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and later followed up his education at Brown University where he initially selected the Classics as his major subject but after confrontation with his father over his choice he changed to economics. However, it wasn’t long before he was expelled for having a girl in his dorm room.

On inheriting the small business from his father he found his niche in life and excelled in the business world with his innovative vision of the future of communications. After the purchase of many businesses over the years and turning around failing companies, Turner created Cable News Network in 1980 with a vision of all day coverage of news as opposed to timed news reports throughout the day. Turner vowed upon launching CNN that, "We won't be signing off until the world ends. We'll be on, and we will cover the end of the world, live, and that will be our last event. . . . and when the end of the world comes, we'll play 'Nearer My God to Thee' before we sign off."In his personal life Ted has been less than successful with three marriages and three divorces. His first marriage was to Judy Nye in 1960 but the marriage was doomed after four years and the couple divorced in 1964. Then in 1965 he married Jane Smith with whom he remained for twenty two years until he met the actress Jane Fonda who he married in 1991 and went on to divorce after just eleven years of marriage, in 2001. Ted Turner’s CNN company which is a part of the Time Warner AOL group has produced several celebrities of its own including, Larry King, Anderson Cooper, son of Gloria Vanderbilt and author of ‘Dispatches from the Edges’ and Nancy Grace, known for her hard cutting legal programs and opinions. He is currently the largest shareholder in Time Warner.His Cable News Network revolutionized news media, coming to the forefront covering the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986 and the Persian Gulf War in 1991. Using his media empire for publicity, Turner turned the Atlanta Braves baseball team into a nationally popular franchise and launched the charitable Goodwill Games.

With the increase of his wealth, Ted has become America’s largest landowner owning in the region of two million acres which amounts to the combined size of Delaware and Rhode Island together.Ted Turner has another passion in his life, sailing. He began sailing when he was just nine years old and went on to enter a competition when he was eleven in the junior program at the Savannah Yacht Club, and later  competed in the Olympic trials in 1964.

It was rumoured in 1998, that Turner he was considering a run for American presidency.Constantly a controversial figure, on his way to absolute riches, Turner managed to make insulting comments regarding Catholics, the Pope, Pollacks, Jews, immigrants, marrying Jane Fonda, having eight kids, and he even asked Rupert Murdoch, the founder of News Corp and owner of Fox and Sky Networks, to enter a boxing ring with him.

Under his ownership, World Championship Wrestling became the only federation in history to out rate and outsell the Vince McMahon family’s World Wrestling Federation. This event brought about a rise in popularity to professional wrestling and is now known as the Monday Night Wars.Ted currently lives with his beagle and can be spotted from time to time walking it in Centennial Olympic Park, which is located in downtown Georgia, Atlanta, with an entourage of bodyguards.
