The Rock
The Rock was born Dwayne Johnson on May 2, 1972. He is an actor and retired professional wrestler and sports entertainer, although he is probably most renowned for his stint in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). After he started wrestling in 1996 The Rock quickly became a standout and popular wrestler, the first third-generation wrestler in the WWE’s (used to be WWF—World Wrestling Federation) entire history. Before he was known as The Rock, Dwayne preferred the nickname Rocky Maivia. This nickname stemmed in honor of his wrestling heritage of his father, pro wrestler and Black Canadian Rocky Johnson, and his grandfather on his mother’s side, High Chief Peter Maivia, also a wrestler.
Before wrestling, The Rock played football during high school and college. He received a full scholarship at the University of Miami, but his hopes for a career in the NFL were dashed when he suffered a severe back injury.
The Rock then made his wrestling debut under the ring name “Flex Kavanah” in the USWA, winning the tag-team championship with Bret Sawyer. In the WWE, The Rock joined “The Nation of Domination,” taking over the leadership. After the group split, he joined the “Corporation,” beginning the now-famous feud with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (Steve Williams)—with whom he is actually good friends.
As a wrestler, The Rock also retained the nicknames The People’s Champion, The Brahma Bull and The Great One. At more than six feet, three inches tall, with a powerful frame and commanding presence, it is easy to see why.
After being kicked off the Corporation, The Rock decided to pursue acting. His film debut was actually back in 1986 with a relatively minor role as a mugger in The Longshot, starring Tim Conway, Jack Weston and Harvey Korman. After The Longshot The Rock took a hiatus from acting for about 15 years—during which time he focused on professional wrestling.
He then went on to star as Mathayus the Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns (2001), co-starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah and Arnold Vosloo, the animated adventure The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian and The Scorpion King (2002) with Steven Brand, Michael Clarke Duncan and Kelly Hu.
While he is most known in acting for his role as Mathayus in these three films, The Rock has also appeared and starred in several movies since then. These include The Rundown (2003), co-starring Seann William Scott, Rosario Dawson and Christopher Walken; Walking Tall (2004), with Johnny Knoxville, Neal McDonough and Kristen Wilson; and in 2005, Be Cool, starring John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Vince Vaughn; and Doom, featuring Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike and Dexter Fletcher.
The Rock married wife Dany Johnson (Garcia) in 1997, and together they have a daughter named Simone Alexandra (2001).
