Thomas Haden Church
A native Texan who got his start in show business as a radio personality, actor Thomas Haden Church is a T.V. and animation voice actor as well as film actor.
Thomas Haden Church was born on June 17, 1961 in Fort Worth, Texas. After working in radio for a time, Thomas landed a small part in independent film Gypsy Angels, starring Vanna White, in 1980, spurring him on to quit his radio job and pursue acting as his career.
Thomas quickly became renowned for his role as airport mechanic Lowell Mather in the hit NBC sitcom Wings, from 1990 to 1995, which also starred Tim Daly, Steven Weber, and Crystal Bernard. He then went on to star opposite Debra Messing in the television series Ned and Stacey for two seasons, from 1995 to 1997.
Church then appeared in various minor, lesser-known or unpopular films in the late-90s and early 2000s. Some examples include George of the Jungle and its sequel, both starring Brendan Fraser; Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, with Billy Zane and Jada Pinkett Smith; Free Money, with Marlon Brando, Donald Sutherland and Charlie Sheen; 3000 Miles to Graceland, with Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner and Courteney Cox; and Monkeybone, with Brendan Fraser again and Bridget Fonda. After his fairly unsuccessful directorial debut in 2003, Rolling Kansas (in which he also acted), Thomas Haden Church decided he was done acting and moved back home to Texas, deciding he was actually retiring completely from the world of acting.
However, director Alexander Payne had promised Thomas a part in his next film, and remained true to his word. Alexander made a personal call to Thomas’ estate to offer him the part of Jack in Sideways alongside Paul Giamatti, which he readily accepted. A good thing, too, as his role in Sideways proved to be the comeback Thomas needed. Church won an IFP Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male and a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Sideways.
Thomas Haden Church then appeared in bigger-hit movies such as Spanglish (2004), starring Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni; and he did voices for Over the Hedge as well as Charlotte’s Web, both in 2006.
Church is going to play one of the villains—Flint Marko and the Sandman—in Spider-Man 3, slated for release in May 2007, also starring Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Topher Grace. However, he has decided to stay in Texas and work as a full-time rancher in addition to acting. |
