Katherine Mathilda Swinton, known popularly as Tilda Swinton, was born November 5, 1960 in London, England. Her parents were Major-General Sir John Swinton and Australia native Judith Balfour. Obtaining her initial education from West Heath Girls’ School, where she shared a class with Princess Diana, Swinton went on to attend Fettes College. She then studied social and political science as well as English at Cambridge University. With her eye on entertainment, Swinton sidestepped the big screen and opted for a career onstage. She worked for the Traverse Theatre as well as the Royal Shakespeare Company before deciding to cross over into film and television. She made her onscreen debut in 1986 with a small role in Caravaggio opposite Sean Bean, Robbie Coltrane, and Garry Cooper. Deliberately taking edgy, independent, and artistic roles in lieu of blockbuster hits, Swinton slowly made a name for herself as a talented and diverse actress. Adding to these credits, she had a particularly well-received turn in 1986’s Egomania – Insel ohne Hoffnung beside Udo Kier. Riding on this success, she appeared in The Deep End and earned her first Golden Globe nomination. After a small role in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Kurt Russell, she joined another ensemble cast in Adaptation with Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, and Chris Cooper. Making her way into the mainstream, she next caught people’s attention as Gabriel in the 2005 thriller Constantine. She appeared onscreen with Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, and Shia LaBeouf.
Later in the same year, she established her name even further when she portrayed the high profile role of the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Her most recent role in Michael Clayton has finally earned her the highest acting honor—an Oscar nomination. In the critically acclaimed thriller, Swinton appeared with Tom Wilkinson, George Clooney, and Sydney Pollack. She is in varying stages of production for Burn After Reading, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll, and Come Like Shadows. Outside of film, Swinton’s artistic mentality culminated in 1995 when she put herself on display for one week at the Serpentine Gallery in London. This quintessential piece of performance art that saw Swinton staying within a glass cage for seven days. In her personal life, she is married to writer and sometimes director John Byrne.
