Tim Blake Nelson Bio
Tim Blake Nelson

A seasoned director, talented singer, accomplished playwright, and character actor, Tim Blake Nelson specializes in mostly white trash-type characters, although he has played varied roles in many films, most of them comic, offbeat and even absurd.

Tim Blake Nelson, a classicist, was born on May 11, 1964 in Tulsa, Oklahoma—the exact location where Matthew Perry’s character Chandler Bing had to move for his job on Friends in season 9. Tim graduated from Holland Hall School in 1982 and then went on to study at Brown University, later graduating from the school.

Nelson got his start in acting in the late 1980s and early-90s through a few T.V. mini-series and sketch comedy series (such as The Unnaturals, Hardcore TV and House of Buggin’) before his feature film debut in This is My Life, starring Julie Kavner, in 1992 when he was 28.

As an actor, Nelson has appeared in mostly minor roles—although some major ones—in such films as The Thin Red Line (1998), which featured many big-name, A-list actors such as Sean Penn, Jim Caviezel, John Travolta, and John Cusask. Other films include Hamlet (2000), starring Ethan Hawke; The Good Girl (2002) starring Jennifer Aniston; Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002), with Tom Cruise ; Holes (2003), where he had a major role alongside Sigourney Weaver; Meet the Fockers (2004), with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro; Syriana (2005), and the HBO T.V. movie Warm Springs (2005), a critically acclaimed film in which he had another fairly major role.

Nelson is also renowned for his work in O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), co-starring George Clooney, John Turturro, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter, based on Homer’s famous Odyssey. Tim is apparently the only one of the cast who actually read the original poem, according to directors Joel and Ethan Coen. On O Brother, Tim was not only an actor but also the voice on the film’s soundtrack song In the Jailhouse Now.

Tim Blake Nelson is also a director, and has directed several films, the most notable of them being the independent Eye of God (1997), which he wrote as well as directed, based on his own play; the controversial, haunting Holocaust drama The Grey Zone (2002), also a film adapted from his play in 1996; and O—a modern, high-school version of William Shakespeare’s play Othello starring Josh Hartnett and Julia Stiles.

Tim Blake Nelson is married to Lisa Benavides and they have three children together.
