Tim Curry
Besides an actor playing mostly dark, villainous or other “bad-guy” roles in both film and television, Tim Curry is also a voice actor for animation, as well as a singer and composer, with an early, and little-known career as a rock ’n roll musician.
Tim Curry was born April 19, 1946 in Grappenhall, Warrington, Chesire, England. Probably the most notable of his villainous acting roles is as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a mad scientist, in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), also starring Susan Sarandon.
Growing up, Curry had an interest in music, citing Billie Holiday as his musical inspiration. He was a boy soprano in the choir at Kingswood School (Methodist), but after school, he decided to pursue studies in both English and drama/theatre at Birmingham as well as Cambridge, and he acted with the Guild Theatre Group.
Then in 1978, Curry released his debut solo album Read My Lips (through A&M Records), and his follow-up and more successful album, Fearless, released the following year. His third and last album is considered to be his weakest—Simplicity (1981). In 1989, he released (still with A&M) The Best of Tim Curry.
Tim Curry is obviously most known for his acting in mostly sinister roles. His very first role was in the original London cast of the musical Hair (1968), where he met writer and actor Richard O’Brien. This friendship led Curry to his most famous role in Richard’s cult musical The Rocky Horror Show and later the movie version, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Curry boasts a long list of notable and extensive roles in T.V. and film. His resume includes a role in Blue Money (1982), with Debbie Bishop and Billy Connolly; Annie (1982), the Broadway musical with Carol Burnett and Aileen Quinn; Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985), with Tom Cruise and Mia Sara; and The Hunt for Red October (1990), with Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin. Since his role in The Hunt for Red October Curry has also starred in It, based on Stephen King’s novel (1991), with John Ritter and Annette O’Toole; The Three Musketeers (1993), with Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris O’Donnell; Brian Jenson’s Muppet Treasure Island (1996); and Addams Family Reunion (1998), with Daryl Hannah and Ed Begley, Jr. The new millennium brought even more roles for Curry, including Charlie’s Angels (2000), with Bill Murray, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore; Scary Movie 2 (2001), starring Anna Faris; and
Kinsey (2004), with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney.
Tim Curry has remained a celebrated, renowned, and critically acclaimed theatre actor in Broadway and in other plays and musicals, even to present day. He has also been a very talented voice actor since the 1990s.
Although he has never received an award for his acting work, Curry has been nominated multiple times between 1981 and 2005, mostly for Tony Awards. He has also been nominated for an Emmy Award nomination.
Tim Curry lives in Los Angeles, although recently he spent time in Chicago, New York, and London for the production of the Broadway hit Monty Python’s Spamalot.
