Tim Mcgraw Bio
Tim McGraw

Samuel Timothy McGraw was born on May 1, 1967 in Delhi, Louisiana. His father, Tug, was a professional relief pitcher who played for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. His mother, Betty, was a waitress. Growing up Tim never knew that his birth father was Tug McGraw; he always thought his stepfather, Horace Smith, was actually his birth father. When he found his birth certificate at the age of 11 his mother finally revealed that Tug was his father.

Throughout high school Tim enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball. He was even awarded a baseball scholarship to Northeast Louisiana University. In college he became a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. This is also where he learned how to play the guitar and would often play and sing for tips. By 1989, McGraw decided to drop out of college and move to Nashville to pursue his dream of becoming a country music singer.

In 1990, McGraw got his first record deal with Curb Records. He did not begin achieving minor hits until 1992 with “Welcome to the Club” which was off his debut album. His second album, Not a Moment too Soon, was released in 1994 and became the best selling country album for the year. His first number one hit on the country charts was “Don’t Take the Girl.” That same year he won two prestigious country music awards for Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist.

In 1996 Tim went on the Spontaneous Combustion Tour, which took him across America and became the most successful country tour that year. His opening act was Faith Hill. While on tour the couple fell in love and was married on October 6, 1996. They have since had three daughters: Gracie Katherine (born in 1997), Maggie Elizabeth (born in 1998) and Audrey Caroline (born in 2001). McGraw has the reputation of being an outstanding family man, much different than the way his own birth father was around him.

Since then, Faith and Tim have collaborated on each other’s albums, often meeting with huge success. In 1998 they sang the duet, “Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me” which landed on Faith’s self-titled album. This was followed up by a second duet for the song “Let’s Make Love” in 1999 that landed on her album, Breathe. The duet won a Grammy award in 2000 for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.

In public interviews McGraw has praised former President Bill Clinton, which is unusual for country music artists, most of whom identify themselves as more conservative than liberal. He has also said that he may be interested in running for Senate one day for the state of Tennessee. He also mentioned in 2006 that he would like to run for Governor ten years down the road because he feels that would give him more of an opportunity to change things.

Along with his country music empire, McGraw has also gotten into acting as well. McGraw’s first film was Black Cloud, which was released in 2004. He also had a part in Friday Night Lights (2004) which stars Billy Bob Thornton and Ray Hernandez. McGraw’s most recent film project is Flicka, which is scheduled to be released on October 20, 2006, and co-stars Alison Lohman and Maria Bello. Tim is also the executive producer of the soundtrack album. The release date of Flicka coincides with McGraw receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His star is located close to Julie Andrews, William Shatner and Greta Garbo.
