Timothy Hutton A lesser-known actor he may be, but Timothy Hutton has an extensive and impressive filmography as well as a coveted Academy Award under his belt. Born on the 16th of August in 1960 in Malibu, California, Hutton is the son of notable Ellery Queen actor Jim Hutton, who died in 1979 from liver cancer, and is the husband of French children’s book illustrator Aurore Giscard d’Estaing, who is the niece of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, the president of France from 1974 to 1981. Hutton, who got his start in acting when he was just five years old with Never Too Late, is probably most known for winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor when he was 20 in Robert Redford’s 1980 classic Ordinary People, in which he starred alongside Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Judd Hirsch. Hutton became the youngest person to receive an Academy Award in this category, and still holds that record today. For this award, Hutton was preceded by Melvyn Douglas in Being There (Peter Sellers, Shirley MacLaine) and succeeded by John Gielgud in Arthur (Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli).
Since this big honor, Hutton has never matched his previous success, although he did snag and pull off various memorable roles on the big screen in recent years, including 1995’s French Kiss, with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline; Beautiful Girls (1996), alongside Matt Dillon, Noah Emmerich, Annabeth Gish, Lauren Holly, and Rosie O’Donnell; The General’s Daughter (1999), which starred John Travolta; Sunshine State (2002), which included Edie Falco from The Sopranos; Secret Window (2004), with Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Maria Bello; Kinsey (2004, Liam Neeson and Laura Linney), and in 2006, The Good Shepherd, which starred Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, and Alec Baldwin. Hutton is also a well-known T.V. actor, his most notable role as detective Archie Goodwin in A Nero Wolfe Mystery from 2001 to 2002. He also landed roles on 1998’s Digging to China, the T.V. mini-series WW3, and in the recent Kidnapped as Conrad Cain, the rich father of a kidnapped teen. Before his marriage to Giscard d’Estaing, Hutton was married to actress Debra Winger—who is known for her performances and Academy Award nominations for 1982’s An Officer and a Gentleman (Richard Gere); Terms of Endearment (1983, with Shirley MacLaine), and 1993’s Shadowlands (with Anthony Hopkins)—from 1986 to 1990, and had a son, Noah, with her.
He and his current wife Aurore also have a son, named Milo. —CL |
