Tina Fey
Like so many Saturday Night Live regulars, Tina Fey got her start at Chicago’s Second City, but only after much work and devotion to improvisational comedy. Her hard work paid off as Fey eventually became the first female head writer in the history of SNL.
Born Elizabeth Tina Fey on May 18, 1970 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Tina studied drama at the University of Virginia. She graduated in 1992 and then moved to Chicago to pursue comedy. Working at a local YMCA to support herself, she attended Second City at night. Encouraged by an instructor there, she auditioned for the more selective Second City Training Center. Fey eventually made it and spent the next two years at Second City.
She joined the staff of Saturday Night Live in 1995, under the head writer Adam McKay. By 1999, Fey made SNL history by becoming the first-ever female head writer. Beginning in 2000, Fey alongside Jimmy Fallon, were the anchors for the show’s “Weekend Update.” After Fallon left the show as a cast member in 2004, Fey was joined by Amy Poehler, and together they became the first pair of women to anchor the segment.
While on SNL, Fey has created parodies of Live with Regis and Kelly and The View and has impersonated Paris Hilton, Vanna White, Paula Zahn, and Barbara Pierce Bush, daughter of President George W Bush. In late 2005, Fey briefly left SNL on maternity leave and was replaced by Horatio Sanz until she returned. She announced in 2006 that she was not returning to SNL for the 2006-2007 season.
Instead, she began working on a situation comedy for NBC titled 30 Rock, meant to represent 30 Rockefeller Plaza where SNL’s studio is located. Fey will write and star in the sitcom that is slated to be based on her experiences while at Saturday Night Live. It is scheduled to debut in the fall 2006 television premier season on NBC in direct competition with another similar premier Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, also on NBC.
Tina Fey is currently married to Jeff Richmond, who is a composer for SNL. They met before their SNL years and dated for seven years prior to their wedding in 2001. They have one daughter, Alice Zenobia Richmond.
