Tito Ortiz
Tito Ortiz is a fighter famed for his participation in Ultimate Fighting. He has also enjoyed a pro-wrestling career and has acted in several films. Despite his controversial behavior in the ring and aggressive attitude toward his rivals, Ortiz is known for his optimistic outlook on life and for his work to help children avoid involvement with urban violence.
Jacob Ortiz was born on January 23, 1975, in Huntington Beach, California (hence his nickname 'The Huntington Beach Bad Boy'), though he spent his early years in Santa Ana, New Mexico. He was always a wayward child and several times found himself in juvenile detention.
When he was thirteen, his American mother divorced his Mexican father and took him and his brothers back to Huntington Beach. There his behaviour changed for the better when he became involved in high school wrestling, devoting every moment of spare time to practice and placing fourth in the state championships. The hard work paid off. During his first two years at Golden West College he was undefeated and won two state titles. He went on to California State University in Bakersfield, where he trained with future NCAA and world champion Stephen Neal.
Ortiz got his big break when local heavyweight star Tank Abbot took him on as a training partner, giving him access to the Ultimate Fighting Championships. At first he competed as an amateur, losing to Guy Mezger in the second round but winning audience acclaim for the way he handled himself during the early part of the match.
Two years later he took on Mezger again and won, celebrating by donning a t-shirt with the slogan 'Gay Mezger is my Bitch'. T-shirts of this kind became a regular gimmick of his, attracting both criticism and fan loyalty. His insults to Mezger's training group, Lion's Den, marked the start of an ongoing rivalry with group leader Ken Shamrock, whom he went on to defeat three times.
In the meantime, he defeated Wanderlei Silva to win the new Light Heavyweight Championship, which he successfully defended five times in the following three years. When a new Interim Light Heavyweight Championship was created he fought Randy Couture, who was close to retirement but nevertheless won, leaving Ortiz tear-stricken.
Ortiz subsequently lost to Chuck Liddell and took six months off to get himself together. He returned to beat Patrick Cote and Vitor Belfort before distancing himself from Ultimate Fighting following a dispute with its head, his former manager Dana White.
At this stage in his career, Ortiz was looking for other options. He became a referee for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and then, to everyone's surprise, joined forces with Ken Shamrock to coach reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter 3.
By this time he was already experienced in front of the cameras. His exuberant personality had attracted lots of attention on shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Last Call with Carson Daly, and he'd also branched out into films, making a splash with his first, Cradle 2 the Grave, alongside Jet Li, DMX and Kelly Hu.
His other big screen work includes Venice Underground with Randall Batinkoff and Edward Furlong; The Crow: Wicked Prayer with Tara Reid and Danny Trejo; and The Dog Problem with Scott Caan and Don Cheadle. Hi newfound fame, along with his striking appearance, gave him the opportunity to appear on the covers of publications like Black Belt Magazine. He also launched his own clothing line, Punishment Athletics.
Ortiz has been married once and has a son, Jacob Ortiz Jr, though the marriage ended in divorce. He is currently dating actress Jenna Jameson, sometimes known as The Queen of Porn. He continues to participate in Mixed Martial Arts fighting and to headline bouts on pay-per-view.
