Tobey Maguire Biography The Spider Man actor was born in 1975 in Santa Monica, California. His parents, Vincent and Wendy, were unwed teenage parents at the time. Tobey maguire quickly became the typical child actor, thanks to his Southern California location. His mother was responsible for getting him into acting when she offered him 100 dollars if he took a drama class in high school instead of the home economics class he had wanted to take. Today, he is best known for his high profile starring roles in Spiderman and its two sequels. Tobey’s teen years paved the way for roles in commercials and bit parts on TV shows. It was when he auditioned for a part in the series Parenthood that he met his best friend, Leonardo DiCaprio, who was auditioning for the same role. Even though DiCaprio was offered the role, Maguire later made guest appearances on the show. The friendship between Maguire and DiCaprio stands today, and Maguire has been known to party with DiCaprio’s crowd, even though he withstands from drugs and alcohol. Tobey secured his first major role in The Ice Storm (1997) directed by Ang Lee. Tobey had great success with that film which led to other starring roles in films such as Pleasantville, The Cider House Rules, and Wonder Boys. He became an icon when he was chosen for the role of Peter Parker in the 2002 film Spiderman. To realistically play the superhero he went through special training and also gained several pounds of muscle. In the film he co-stars with another one of his good friends, Kirsten Dunst. The box office success of the first Spiderman has spawned two sequels that more than tripled Maguire’s salary.
After his role and weight gain in the first Spiderman, Tobey was offered the role as Red Pollard in the film Seabiscuit (2003). For this role he had to quickly lose 25 pounds in order to realistically play the horse jockey. It was said that he ate only one small meal a day in order to accomplish this amazing feat. Unlike many celebrities in Hollywood, Tobey prefers a quiet and pure life. He is a vegetarian and is a yoga practitioner. He also enjoys cooking and at one point he wanted to be a chef. Another hobby of Tobey’s is poker. He has played in several poker tournaments, including the World Series of Poker, placing in the money more than once. In one tournament, he won the first prize of $95,480. Maguire obviously takes his hobby very seriously because he takes lessons from poker pro Daniel Negreanu. Tobey keeps his private life private. His previous relationships includes actress Rashida Jones. They were engaged back in 2002, but the relationship did not last. Maguire then met Jennifer Meyer in 2003 while filming Seabiscuit at Universal Studios, and in 2006 became engaged to the girl who is the daughter of a Universal Studios executive. Jennifer is a jewelry designer based in Los Angeles. By September 2007 the pair had made the commitment of marriage in Kona, Hawaii. They now have a daughter named Ruby Sweetheart Maguire who was born on November 10th 2006. Ruby's middle name comes from a childhood nickname of Meyer's given to her by her grandmother, who died a few months before Ruby's birth. |
