Tom Arnold
Tom Arnold is the stand-up comic that has had a precarious career in acting. His former marriage to fellow comic, the brash Rosanne Barr, helped him to establish himself in the media world. Arnold has had many hit and misses, not only in his career, but in his personal life as well.
Tom Arnold was born on March 6, 1959 in Ottumwa, Iowa. He had a difficult childhood, being molested by a pedophiliac neighbor who was hired as a babysitter, and would later take a stand and support charities for children in this cause. He began in stand up comedy by attending open mic nights at The University of Iowa. In 1988, he won first place in the Minneapolis Comedy Competition, a triumph that prompted him to move to Los Angeles and pursue comedy.
As soon as Arnold arrived in California, he was hired as a staff writer for the successful television sitcom Roseanne. He appeared regularly on the show as “Arnie” and would eventually become the show’s executive producer. It was his marriage to the show’s star, Roseanne Barr in 1990 that thrust him to the spotlight, usually of newsstand tabloids.
Throughout their four years of marriage, Tom and Roseanne would achieve continuous status as public spectacles, due in large part to their often shocking behavior. In 1994, they went through a very public divorce.
With little else to his credit, many felt that Arnold’s career was over in light of his divorce, but he surprised critics with his supporting role in James Cameron’s blockbuster film True Lies, also starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. Arnold later would publicly support his True Lies co-star in his California gubernatorial election.
In 1998, Tom Arnold attempted to make a comeback to sitcom television with The Tom Show, but it flailed about for 18 episodes before the plug was pulled. Since then, Arnold has worked in television and film both as an actor, writer, and producer without much consequence. He has also lent his voice in episodes of King of the Hill, The Fairly OddParents, and is the voice of Arby’s commercial oven-mitt. He was widely noted as one of the original hosts of Fox Sport Network’s The Best Damn Sports Show, Period when it debuted in 2001.
Since his divorce from Roseanne, Tom Arnold has been married twice. His second wife was Julie Champnella. He is currently married to political consultant Shelby Roos, but they are separated.
