Tom Berenger
Tom Berenger, the rugged but handsome blue-eyed actor who won acclaim for his role in Platoon, has a Hollywood career spanning over twenty years that has ranged from daytime drama to Academy Award winning films. Though many know his face before his name, he has carved a niche in successfully portraying roles in action films.
Tom Berenger was born Thomas Michael Moore on May 31, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. Berenger actually started out with an interest in journalism, which he majored in at the University of Missouri. He reportedly tried out for a role in a play on a bet and subsequently sought a career in acting, moving to New York after graduating from college. While in New York, Berenger worked in regional theatre and would eventually launch his acting career with the role of Tim Seigel on the daytime soap opera One Life to Live.
In his film debut, Berenger was cast as the lead in the 1976 film Rush It. Throughout the 1970s, Berenger was cast in smaller film roles and made for television movies until he was once again cast in the lead as Butch Cassidy in Butch and Sundance: The Early Years in 1979.
In 1983, Berenger appeared in Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill, which also starred Glenn Close, Kevin Kline, William Hurt, and Jeff Goldblum. However, Berenger wouldn’t achieve Hollywood acclaim as an actor until his 1986 role as Sgt. Barnes in Oliver Stone’s Platoon, a role for which Berenger received an Oscar nomination.
Throughout the mid 1980s and early 1990s, Berenger continued to have a steady acting career in films and television, though mostly in supporting roles. He notably appeared in the television sitcom Cheers in its final season as the plumber who inadvertently won Kirstie Alley’s character (Rebecca Howe’s) heart. He has also appeared in TV’s Law & Order, Ally McBeal, and Third Watch. Berenger is also the lead in all three Sniper films. He most recently appeared in the television mini-series Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King.
Tom Berenger has been married three times, most recently to Patricia Alvaran and has a total of six children. Berenger began producing films in 1995, when he produced and also starred in The Avenging Angel, a made for television movie in which he also cast his two daughters, Chelsea and Chloe. His most notable production was the 1997 television movie Rough Riders. Berenger continues to work in television and film, both as an actor and producer and currently resides in South Carolina. |
