Tom Green Bio
Tom Green

A shocking comedic prankster, Tom Green has hosted his own show in some capacity since his college days. Spanning the airwaves from radio to television, and now the internet, Green has an undetermined future as a late-night television host and a colorful past in comedy, music, television and film.

Born July 30, 1971, in Pembroke, Ontario, Michael Thomas Green grew up in suburban Ottawa. He attended Algonquin College and hosted a radio show on University of Ottawa’s campus radio station. This led to his own series on an Ottawa-based community channel, which was later acquired by Canada’s Comedy Network.

Having become popular in Canada, MTV gave Tom the opportunity to write and host his own show, The Tom Green Show. The show was a variety show program that included musical guests performing live and taped segments of Green pulling pranks on unsuspecting people, including at times his parents. He also performed stunts and skits with antics to elicit shock and amusement.

In one incident Green placed his own piece of artwork in the National Gallery of Canada and then returned later to vandalize the piece, shocking unsuspecting visitors who witnessed him. Other notable Tom Green antics include the “moose humping” incident referenced by Eminem’s The Real Slim Shady and the transformation of his father’s car into “the slut mobile.”

After the show aired a season on MTV, Green became recognized in the United States and began to appear in films that were very successful failures, including the Golden Raspberry Award-Winning Freddy got Fingered. In good-natured humor, Green actually showed up for receipt of his Golden Raspberry.

Green was gathering a fan following and furthered this with his song The Lonely Swedish (The Bum Bum Song), which he aired in music video format on his show on a cruise ship during MTV’s Spring Break. After encouraging viewers to request the video on MTV’s Total Request Live, the video went to number one, but with a request from MTV, which Green complied with, the video was retired. The song was essentially comprised of bathroom humor and non-sense lyrics, also referenced in The Real Slim Shady.

In March of 2000, Green was diagnosed with testicular cancer and stopped production of his show. The unconventional Green later created a one-hour special for MTV highlighting his battle with cancer and actually showing footage of his surgeries. He also started a cancer research fund.

When Green returned to MTV in 2003 with The New Tom Green Show, it was considered less controversial and more conventional than the original and was soon cancelled due to low ratings. Green by no means disappeared, but he spent the next several months visiting troops in Kosovo and the Persian Gulf and also wrote his autobiography titled Hollywood Causes Cancer.

Not choosing to keep his health private, Green’s love life was also the height of public scrutiny when he announced his engagement to actress Drew Barrymore in 2000 following an invited appearance in Charlie’s Angles, produced by Barrymore. The couple created media hype in the months preceding their actual marriage, including a hoax that they would marry on the set of Saturday Night Live. They in fact officially married on July 7, 2001 but filed for divorce just six months later. All public statements indicated an amicable, but incompatible, relationship.

Tom Green now hosts the first ever, live web-based show, which he films from his own home in California. ManiaTV.com’s Tom Green Live airs Monday through Thursday at 11:00 pm EST. TomGreen.com also hosts his personal blog along with several “deputy” bloggers. His deputy bloggers have begun the Tom Green Show 2009 Campaign in an effort to persuade NBC to allow Green to fill the late night opening that will be left vacant by Jay Leno upon retirement that year. The petition has currently achieved signature numbers approaching 2000 and includes Andy Dick, Howard Stern, and Christopher McDonald.
