Tom Selleck
Donning a Hawaiian shirt and a Detroit Tigers baseball cap as Thomas Magnum, super-hunk private investigator in the television series Magnum P.I., Tom Selleck rose to television stardom. Successful as Selleck’s television career became, it may have hindered his chances at a smooth transition from the small screen to the big screen. Selleck has never become a huge Hollywood star, but has maintained a respectable television presence during his long-running acting career.
Tom Selleck was born on January 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan to Robert and Martha Selleck. Tom’s father Robert was a real estate guru who became the first vice president of Coldwell Banker. Raised in Los Angeles, Tom was not aware he was destined for acting fame even when he attended college. It was while he was attending the University of Southern California in Los Angeles on an athletic scholarship and majoring in business administration that a drama coach suggested he try his hand at acting. His first television appearance was on the TV game show The Dating Game as a senior, and Selleck later studied acting at The Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas.
With his ruggedly handsome good looks, athletic physique, and melt-your-heart smile, Tom should have been a shoe-in for the movies. He was a solid sex symbol of the eighties, but never became a full-fledged movie star. His feature film debut was in 1970 with Myra Beckinridge and with small roles in television including The Rockford Files starring James Garner, Tom would struggle through the decade until his ship, or more like Ferrari, came in.
Selleck’s success came after six failed pilots of Magnum P.I., when the show caught on and ran for eight seasons with a grand total of 162 episodes. A top-rated prime time series, Magnum P.I. was Selleck’s catapult to stardom. His starring role in the series won him an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Though the show brought him much success and recognition, it was a trade-off. It was in his early days as Magnum that Steven Spielberg sought Selleck for Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the show’s producers would not release him, forcing him to turn down the role that subsequently went to Harrison Ford.
Magnum’s producers eventually lightened up and Selleck starred alongside Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg in the 1987 film Three Men and a Baby. Though not a blockbuster film, it enjoyed mild success. In 1990, two years after the finale of Magnum, Selleck appeared in the film Quiggly Down Under and the sequel, Three Men and a Little Lady. With no films of any significant merit, Tom Selleck simply stuck with television.
During the nineties, Selleck appeared in a recurring role on the number-one comedy series Friends as Dr. Richard Burke, long time friend of the Gellar family and romantic interest of Courteney Cox’s Monica. Selleck has also appeared in numerous television movies, specifically modern-day westerns such as Crossfire Trail and Monte Walsh. In 2006 he resumed regular television with a recurring role on Boston Legal as Ivan Tiggs and is lending his voice to the 2007 animated film Meet the Robinsons.
Tom has been married twice and has one adopted son by his first marriage to model Jacqueline Ray and one daughter, Hannah, born to his second wife to Jillie Mack. Selleck is currently divorced, owns property in the British Columbia, and is an outspoken, card-carrying member of the NRA. |
