Toni Collette
Aussie actress Toni Collette was born on November 1, 1972 in Sydney, Australia. From an early age, Toni had ambitions of becoming an actress. She made her stage debut at age 14 in her school’s production of Godspell. Toni went on to attend the National Institute of Dramatic Art, but dropped out a few years after enrolling in order to begin her career as a working actor.
After appearing in various stage productions, Toni made her big screen debut in Spotswood (1992) alongside Anthony Hopkins and then-unknown actor, Russell Crowe. Toni’s breakthrough role came in 1994, when she was chosen to play long-suffering wallflower Muriel/Mariel Heslop in Muriel's Wedding – a role for which she gained 40 pounds in just seven weeks to play.
The surprise success of Muriel's Wedding led to parts in other films for Toni, including Cosi (1996) and Clockwatchers (1997), a dark office comedy about the marginalization of office temps, also starring Lisa Kudrow and Parker Posey. Toni continued to cross film genres throughout the 90s in Douglas McGrath's 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense (1999) – in which she earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her performance as the naturally concerned mother of a child who sees dead people.
In 2001, Toni starred in the made for TV movie Dinner with Friends alongside Andie MacDowell and Dennis Quaid. That same year, she starred in The Hours as part of a formidable cast which included Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, and Ed Harris. In 2002, Toni starred opposite Hugh Grant in an adaptation of author Nick Hornby's About a Boy.
Although she has taken on a broad range of films and genres, Toni continues to be selected for roles that mirror the figure of the withdrawn sidekick to a more outgoing character, as popularized in Muriel’s Wedding. In 2005, Toni played the in-the-shadows sister to Cameron Diaz’s character in In Her Shoes. Although Toni had intended not to gain weight for anymore movie roles, In Her Shoes director Curtis Hanson convinced the actress to gain twenty-five pounds for her role, which Toni eventually conceded was relevant to her character's personality.
In 2006, Toni starred alongside Robin Williams in the psychological thriller The Night Listener, marking a departure from her usual feel-good films. Also in 2006, Toni appeared in the Indie comedy Little Miss Sunshine opposite Steve Carell and Greg Kinnear.
On January 11, 2003, Toni married Dave Galafassi. The couple divides their time between homes in Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Toni is also an adventurous world-traveler. She has gone on spiritual retreats to India and also climbed the Tibetan Himalayas.
In addition to acting, Toni also has a love of music. She has recently finished writing and recording the album Beautiful Awkward Pictures, and is ready to embark on a national tour with her band, The Finish.
A vegetarian and active petitioner for animal rights, Toni supports People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and has recently lent her voice in protesting the Australian practice of mulesing sheep (the surgical removal of strips of the sheep’s skin from around its tail) to Prime Minister John Howard.
