Tony Shalhoub
Anthony Marcus Shalhoub was born on October 9, 1953 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His father was an orphan from Lebanon who immigrated to the United States when he was ten. His mother is a second generation Lebanese-American.
Tony got his start in acting thanks to his older brothers and sisters. When he was six years old, his sister volunteered him for the part of an extra in the high school production of The King and I. Following his introduction to the theater, Tony became very interested in acting.
Shalhoub graduated from Green Bay East High. Following high school, Tony attended the University of Southern Maine earning his bachelor’s degree in Drama. He then attended Yale School of Drama earning his master’s degree in 1980.
Following school, Shaloub moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he worked with the American Repertory Theatre. Four years later, Shalhoub moved to New York City and was forced to wait tables before working his way onto Broadway. While in New York, Tony earned a Tony award nomination for his role in Conversations with my Father. He also met his future wife, Brooke Adams, in a Broadway production.
In 1992 Shalhoub married Adams. Following their marriage, Shalhoub adopted Brooke’s first daughter, Josie Lynn, from a previous marriage. The couple welcomed their first child together, Sophie, in 1993. They currently split their home between Los Angeles and Green Bay.
After moving to Los Angeles in the early 1990’s with his family, Shaloub got the part at his first audition for the television show, Wings, co-starring Tim Daly, Steven Weber, Crystal Bernard, Thomas Haden Church, and Rebecca Schull.
Shalhoub began slowly building his resume with parts in films like The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), co-starring Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Billy Bob Thornton, and Michael Badalucco. This was followed by Men in Black (1997) starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and Thir13en Ghosts (2001) co-starring Matthew Lillard and Shannon Elizabeth. His most recent film role is in The Last Shot (2004) starring Alec Baldwin, Matthew Broderick, Toni Colette, and Tim Blake Nelson.
Shalhoub has probably become most famous for his starring role on the hit detective show on USA networks, Monk, which began in 2002. His role as the obsessive compulsive detective Adrian Monk won him an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, once in 2003 and once in 2005. He was also nominated again in 2006. His wife, Brooke, has also made several guest appearances on the show.
Other than acting, Shalhoub also helped to establish the Arab-American Filmmaker Award Competition in 2005. For the competition, Arab-American filmmakers submit their screenplays and the winner is flown to Hollywood where their screenplay is produced. Shalhoub has also made his directorial debut in the film Made Up (2002), starring his wife, Brooke Adams, Lynn Adams, and Eva Amurri. |
