Tyne Daly Bio

Tyne Daly

Over her long and impressive career, Tyne Daly has proven over and over again that her talent, charm, and beauty are a lasting phenomenon in Hollywood. Ellen Tyne Daly, known popularly as Tyne Daly, was born February 21, 1946, in Madison, Wisconsin. Her father was actor James Daly, while her younger brother, Tim Daly, also chose the acting profession. Daly pursued her studies at Brandeis University as well as The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

She made her onscreen debut in 1954 for a one-episode appearance in the television drama Foreign Intrigue. For almost the entirety of the next thirty years, Daly made a name for herself in bit parts for various television shows such as McMillan & Wife, with Rock Hudson, and Mission Impossible, with Martin Landau, among others. Daly won her first of many Emmys for her work on the drama Intimate Strangers.

But even with her successful projects, Daly was a relative unknown until everything changed in 1982. Winning the role of Mary Beth Lacey to Sharon Gless' Christine Cagey, the wildly popular television series Cagey & Lacey ran for seven seasons and earned Daly four Emmy wins and another two Emmy nominations. Always busy, Daly appeared in a slew of television and film projects until her next big success with the television series Christy. Her co-stars included Kellie Martin and Jack Landry, but it was Daly's acting prowess that earned the show accolades. She won another Emmy and one more Emmy nomination for her two seasons with the show.

With the conclusion of yet another show, Daly went back to what she knew best: television appearances and made-for-TV films. Notable appearances include Veronica's Closet in 1999, with Kirstie Alley, Dan Cortese, Daryl Mitchell, and Kathy Najimy, as well as The Magnificent Seven, with Ron Perlman. In 1999, Daly secured a position on yet another hit series, Judging Amy, opposite star Amy Brenneman. In recognition of her outstanding work during the show's six seasons, Daly was nominated for Emmys each and every single season the show was on the air. She won in 2003.

Not surprisingly, Daly is also an established theater actor. She made her Broadway debut in 1967 for the play That Summer, That Fall. She also had a successful, Tony-winning turn from 1989 to 1990 with Gypsy, and she starred opposite Cynthia Nixon in the 2006 play Rabbit Hole. Daly is viewed by many of her fans as a kind of feminist role model not only for the strong women she's portrayed over the years, but also for her refusal to alter her looks as she ages. During the filming of Judging Amy, for example, Daly proudly displayed her naturally graying hair. Daly married fellow actor Georg Stanford Brown in 1966. The couple had three daughters before divorcing in 1990.
