Tyrese Gibson was born on December 30, 1978 and goes primarily by his first name only. He was born in Los Angeles, California and attended Locke High School. Tyrese, along with his three older siblings, was raised by his mother Priscilla, who acted as a single parent after Gibson’s father abandoned the family in 1983.
Gibson’s career in the entertainment business began when he won a talent show at the age of fourteen. This was followed by starring in an ad for Coca-Cola where he sang the famous phrase, “Always Coca-Cola”. Following the commercial, Gibson began modeling for Tommy Hilfiger at the age of 17.
Gibson’s first break in the music industry came when he was a member of the rap group known as Triple Impact. Tyrese released his debut solo album in 1998, which went platinum. In 2001 Tyrese came out with his second album called 2000 Watts. The album, which went gold, is the same name as the charity organization Gibson founded to help inner city children. Prior to the release of his second album, Gibson was named as one of the Sexiest Men of the Year by People magazine in 2000.
Gibson’s first feature film was in the 2001 movie, Baby Boy. Gibson’s role was originally given to Tupac Shakur and Tyrese took his place after Shakur’s death. The film co-starred Snoop Dogg and Taraji P. Henson. The film was a success critically.
Following Gibson’s role in Baby Boy, he landed roles in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) co-starring Paul Walker and Eva Mendes. Following that film, Gibson starred in Flight of the Phoenix (2004) which was an adaptation of a 1964 novel. The film co-starred Dennis Quaid, and Giovanni Ribisi. In 2005, Tyrese starred in Four Brothers alongside Mark Wahlberg, Andre Benjamin, and Garrett Hedlund. In 2006, Gibson starred in two films. In 2007, Tyrese is set to star in Transformers alongside Jon Voight, Shia LaBeouf, and Bernie Mac.
On top of acting and singing, Gibson has proven himself to be multi-talented when he established himself as a screenwriter and selling D.A. Verdict to MGM and Extortion to Universal Studios. He also established his own television and film production company called HQ Pictures.
Although his acting career has picked up in recent years, Gibson has not left his music career behind. In 2002 he released his third album to date; I Wanna go There, which went gold. He has recently released a Mix Tape called Best of Both Hoodz where Tyrese makes his debut as a rapper under the Alias Black Tie. The album features Chingy, Missy Elliott, and many more famous rappers. Tyrese scheduled to come out with a new album, Alter Ego, sometime toward the end of 2006. At the beginning of the year some tracks were stolen from his desk, at a time when a definite release date had been decided for the album and making Tyrese rethink the way things work in his office.
