Virginie Ledoyen Biography

French actress Virginie Ledoyen made her mark in French film with a slew of impressive and critically acclaimed roles. She then became known in the United States for her involvement with L’Oréal and her starring role in The Beach.

Virginie Fernandez, known popularly as Virginie Ledoyen, was born November 15, 1976 in Aubervilliers, France. Some sources, however, cite her year of birth as 1974.

Entering the spotlight at age two, Ledoyen’s first job within the entertainment business was as a print model. She later took her stage name in honor of her grandmother who was a noted stage actress.

Switching from modeling to acting, Ledoyen made her onscreen debut in 1987 with Les Exploits d’un Jeune Don Juan. Continuing to act steadily, Ledoyen earned the title role in 1991’s Mima. However, she wouldn’t earn her real breakout role until 1993 with Les Marmottes. The film costarred Jacqueline Bisset and Anouk Aimee, but it was Ledoyen that walked away with a Cesar Award nomination for Most Promising Actress.

In 1994, Ledoyen once again took the lead. This time around it was for the period piece La Vie de Marianne based on the novel by Marivaux.

The end of 1994 would bring Ledoyen even more critical acclaim for her leading role in L’Eau Froide. Acting beside Cyprien Fouquet, she was once again nominated for a Cesar Award as Most Promising Actress.

After all this exposure, Ledoyen finally earned the role that made her a household name. In 1995, she took the courageous lead in La Fille Seule, for which she was nominated yet again for a Cesar Award.

With her star-making turn, Ledoyen had enough clout to start earning more high profile roles such as 1995’s La Cérémonie opposite Isabelle Huppert and Jean Pierre Cassel.

She had another popular turn in 1997’s Héroїnes with Dominic Gould, which she followed with Marianne. Vacillating between quirky comedies and serious dramas, 1998 brought another critic favorite Ledoyen’s way. Portraying Jeanne in Jeanne et la Garçon Formidable, she won Best Actress at the Paris Film Festival.

With such success in her native country of France, Ledoyen decided to cross the Atlantic and make her debut in American film. Her first endeavor was a small role in 1998’s A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries with Kris Kristofferson, Barbara Hershey, Leelee Sobieski, and Jesse Bradford.

But it was 2000 that really introduced her to the American viewing public. In this year, she co-starred in the dramatic thriller The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio, Tilda Swinton, and Robert Carlyle. Jumping to her next project, she portrayed Cosette in the 2000 mini-series of Les Misérables with Gerard Depardieu, Christian Clavier, and John Malkovich.

Returning to her French roots, she took a role opposite Catherine Deneuve in the comedy 8 Femmes.

Most recently, she appeared in La Doublure with Kristin Scott Thomas and Holly with Ron Livingston and Chris Penn.

Outside of acting, Ledoyen capitalized on her increased exposure to land a five year contract with L’Oréal from 2000 to 2005.

In her personal life, she welcomed her first daughter, Lilas, on September 29, 2001. She married Iain Rogers, a film director, on September 20, 2007. She was also briefly linked to her Beach costar DiCaprio.
