Wes Anderson Bio
Wes Anderson

Wesley (Wes) Wales Anderson was born May 1, 1969 in Houston, Texas. His parents were Melver Leonard Anderson, an advertising man, and Texas Ann Burroughs, an archaeologist. He was the second of three children. Anderson’s education began at St. John’s School, a private school later used as a filming location for his film Rushmore. For his secondary education, Anderson attended the University of Texas where two notable things happened. One, he studied philosophy, and two, he met Owen Wilson.

Wilson and Anderson immediately hit it off both professionally and personally. Together they wrote and created a fourteen minute short entitled Bottle Rocket (1994). With a low budget and names that didn’t pull any weight in the movie world, Anderson decided to cast Owen Wilson and his brother Luke Wilson in the leads, even though they had never acted in a film before. Despite being amateurs in the filmmaking game, the production caught the attention of famed producer James L. Brooks (longtime executive producer of The Simpsons and many various films). Brooks strongly believed in the Anderson/Wilson collaborative team, and pulled some professional strings to get Bottle Rocket into the Sundance Film Festival. With its positive reception, Brooks decided to fund the full-length version.

In 1996, Bottle Rocket was released. Still starring Luke and Owen, the film was immediately met with critical and public acclaim. Anderson went on to win the MTV Movie Award for Best New Filmmaker, the Los Angeles Film Critics New Generation Award and the Lone Star Film and Television Award for Debut of the Year (awarded to Anderson, Luke and Owen Wilson).

Two years later, Rushmore hit the screens, and Anderson’s place as the up and coming independent filmmaker of the day was solidified. Using the clout and acclaim provided by Bottle Rocket, Anderson was able to secure some of Hollywood’s A-list. Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Olivia Williams, Brian Cox and Luke Wilson all starred. Again, Owen and Anderson co-wrote the script. Individual actors were heavily praised, and Anderson took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director (the rough independent equivalent of the Oscar) and the Lone Star Film and Television Award for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

His next endeavor was The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). By now a formidable name in directing, Anderson was able to obtain an all-star cast including Murray, the Wilsons, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Gene Hackman and Anjelica Huston. Anderson’s hard work finally paid off, and he and Wilson were recognized by the Academy Awards with a nomination for Best Screenplay. Along with numerous other accolades, Anderson also had a substantive commercial success.

In 2004, Anderson unveiled his new work The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The first of his scripts not to be co-written by Wilson, Anderson and Noah Baumbach penned Life Aquatic. Again leading an all-star cast, the film was another commercial success but some of the critical praise began to falter. Anderson was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award, but little else.

Anderson has currently announced his intention to direct an adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel The Fantastic Mr. Fox using the stop-motion animation present in Life Aquatic. He is also purportedly in the very early stages of developing his new feature film The Darjeeling Limited.

Switching gears, Anderson began work on The Squid and the Whale. The film was successful and went on to win two awards at the Sundance Film Festival as well as an Oscar nomination.

When working on a film, Anderson is known for his deep involvement at every creative and technical level. He is similarly known for his stylized and recognizable shots and often called upon dramatic themes.

Anderson is notoriously private about his personal life, but he has been linked to actress Tara Subkoff. The actual status of their relationship is unknown.
