Willa Ford
Willa Ford, singer, songwriter, and more, whose debut album Willa Was Here is suggestive of the fact that she is here, as well as there and a little bit of everywhere. Willa Ford personifies her bad girl image in her songs and other ventures with no qualms about hiding who she is.
Willa Ford was born Amanda Lee Williford on January 22, 1981 in Ruskin, Florida. She was very musically inclined, especially in vocals, as a child. She toured with Tampa-based Children’s Performing Arts Troupe Entertainment Revue when she was just 11 years old, where she advanced from chorus member to soloist. She graduated high school with a 4.25 grade point average.
At the age of 18, she began performing under MCA as “Mandah” and she released her first single, “Lullaby,” which was featured on the soundtrack album Pokemon: The First Movie. She subsequently landed the opening act for the Backstreet Boys. Opening for the Backstreet Boys gained her some public attention, as did her dating relationship with member Nick Carter.
MCA had Amanda change her stage name to Willa to avoid confusion with pop-star Mandy Moore, but though the stage name stuck, the girl-next-door image under which MCA promoted Willa Ford did not. She was soon released to Lava/Atlantic Records where she released her first album, Willa Was Here in 2001. Her first hit single “I Wanna Be Bad” was from her debut album, but the album never made it past 56 on the Billboard charts.
Ford had also begun to appear on reality television, hosting MTV’s Total Request Live, and serving as a spokesperson for Pantene. Though she continued working on her music and released the single “A Toast to Men” in 2003, the album from whence it came was never released due to legal matters. In the meantime, Ford left Lava/Atlantic and went on to pursue other avenues.
She has appeared in The Ultimate Fighter, a reality-based television show, and has posed for Playboy magazine. More recently in 2006, Ford appeared as a celebrity dancer on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. She is planning to return to her musical career once her agreement with the show is fulfilled. |
