William Shatner
William Shatner was born on March 22, 1931 in Quebec, Canada. His parents, Joseph Shatner and Anna Garmaise, were children of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Shatner attended Willingdon Elementary School as well as West Hill High School in Montreal.
Shatner then attended McGill University studying commerce. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1952. After he obtained stardom, a building on the campus was unofficially dubbed the Shatner building. Following his graduation Shatner, who was trained as a Shakespearean actor, performed at the Shakespearean Stratford Festival of Canada held in Stratford, Ontario.
William made his first television appearance when he was cast as “Ranger Bill” on the Howdy Doody Show in 1954. This was followed by his 1958 movie debut in the film The Brothers Karamazov. After his film debut, Shatner made his debut on Broadway appearing in The World of Suzie Wong (1959).
Shatner earned the role which made him most famous in 1966. He was cast as captain James Tiberius Kirk for the second pilot of Star Trek. He held the role of captain from 1966 to 1969. The show co-starred Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley.
Shatner further capitalized on his role of captain when he became the voice of Captain Kirk in the animated Star Trek series in 1973. This was followed by Shatner starring in a series of six Star Trek films between 1979 and 1991.
Following his hugely successful run as Captain Kirk, Shatner had a hard time finding work for a while because everyone saw him only as Captain Kirk. He was forced to take bit parts and make small party appearances to support his family. Eventually, the bit parts paved the way for higher paying roles.
One of his first recurring roles following Star Trek was on the show T.J. Hooker, which ran from 1982 to 1986. Shatner played a police officer along with co-stars Heather Locklear, Adrian Zmed, Richard Herd, and James Herron.
Shatner was then nominated for an Emmy for his recurring role on the television show, 3rd Rock from the Sun, starring John Lithgow, Kirsten Johnston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and French Stewart.
By 2004, Shatner’s career reached a new high point when he was cast as an attorney for the drama series, The Practice. The show’s cast includes Dylan McDermott, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucci, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Kelli Williams, Lara Flynn Boyle, Marla Sokoloff, and James Spader. His character, Denny Crane, also appeared on the show Boston Public. His role earned him two Emmy awards in 2004 and 2005, and a Golden Globe in 2005.
Shatner has also contributed to the charity organization, Habitat for Humanity. In 2006, he sold his kidney stone for $75,000 to GoldenPalace.com. He then helped raise an additional $20,000 from the cast and crew of Boston Public.
Shatner has been married four times. He married his first wife, Gloria Rand, in 1956. They have three daughters together, named Leslie Carol, born in 1958, Lisabeth Mary, born in 1960, and Melanie, born in 1964. Throughout the divorce proceedings in 1969, Rand financially drained Shatner to the point where he had to sleep in his camper in the San Fernando Valley of California.
From 1973 to 1994 Shatner was married to Marcy Lafferty. In 1997, he married Nerine Kidd. In 1999, Shatner found Nerine dead in their pool. Her death was deemed an accidental drowning. Valium and Alcohol were found in her system during the autopsy.
Shatner’s current wife is Elizabeth Martin, a horse trainer. The couple married in 2001 after connecting over their love of horses. They share a 360-acre horse farm in Kentucky. Together, they enjoy breeding and showing American Saddlebreds and Quarter Horses.
