Woody Allen Bio

Woody Allen Woody Allen is a one man showcase of talent, having created some of the best films ever made. He is a native New Yorker who truly loves and draws inspiration from his birthplace. Allen has also paid homage to European directors such as Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini. The early comedy films he came to be known for were followed by movies which told emotional, dramatic stories as well as making us laugh. Major stars fall over themselves to be cast by Woody Allen. He has acted in most of his films, reprising the nervous persona which he developed as a stand-up comic in nightclubs and TV. Comedy launched Woody Allen into show business when he wrote scripts for Sid Caesar and Ed Sullivan. After that, he did his stand-up routines and made his debut into movies in 1965. He wrote the screenplay for What’s New Pussycat?, a sex comedy in which Woody also acted along with Peter Sellers, Peter O’Toole and Capucine. Clive Donner was the director. Woody Allen has been prolific in making long strings of hit movies ever since. He directed, co-wrote and acted in comedies such as Take the Money and Run and Bananas. His landmark film however, came in 1977 when he directed and co-wrote Annie Hall. Acting opposite Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, and Shelley Duvall, Woody was awarded the Best Director at that season’s Oscars.
Two years later saw the release of Manhattan. This is Woody Allen sending a love letter to his beloved New York. Shot in black and white and with a jazz score, it is wonderfully atmospheric. Woody directed, co-wrote, and acted as usual. His co-stars were Mariel Hemingway (granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway), Diane Keaton and Michael Murphy. The 1980s and 1990s continued the creativity of Woody Allen. He still directed, wrote, or co-wrote his movies and acted in most of them. Hannah and Her Sisters is a romantic drama and starred Barbara Hershey, Carrie Fisher, Michael Caine, and Mia Farrow. This was followed by Crimes and Misdemeanors with Martin Landau, Anjelica Huston, Mia Farrow, and Alan Alda. Woody cast Mia Farrow again, in Husbands and Wives along with Judy Davis, Sydney Pollack, and Liam Neeson. Woody did not act in Bullets Over Broadway, in which John Cusack, Dianne West, and Jennifer Tilly appeared. Match Point, in 2005, which Woody Allen wrote and directed, was not very well received. It’s a romantic drama featuring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Scarlett Johansson. The film referenced to the great novel Crime and Punishment, but barely missed in the box office, perhaps due to its more independent feel. No doubt, Woody will find his groove again. In the meantime, he’ll pursue his other passion, playing jazz clarinet in a New York club. He changed his name to Woody as a tribute to clarinetist Woody Herman.
The romantic entanglements of Woody Allen have been somewhat complicated. He married a philosophy student as a young man, and then divorced to later marry Louise Lasser, his co-star in Bananas. This too ended in divorce. Woody famously had a romance with Diane Keaton, before having a long relationship with Mia Farrow. They adopted two children together and had one child of their own. Woody and Mia separated after Woody’s affair with Soon-Yi Previn was revealed. Soon-Yi is the adopted daughter of Mia and her previous beau, Andre Previn. This naturally caused controversy, but Woody and Soon-Yi stated their commitment to each other by marrying in 1997 and adopting two daughters. |
