Zoe Saldana Biography
Zoe Yanira Zaldana Nazario was born June 19, 1978 in New Jersey. Fluent in Spanish and English, both her parents were immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Until the age of nine, Saldana was raised in Queens, New York . However, her father was tragically killed in a car accident, and her mother relocated the family (herself, Saldana, and her sister) to their homeland.
It was in the Dominican Republic where she first began dancing. Enrolling in one of the country’s finest dance school, Saldana began intensively studying ballet. By her sophomore year in high school, it became obvious that her talent and determination would not go unfulfilled. The family moved back to the where Saldana pursued her dance career. She enrolled in the New York acting course Faces Theater Program.
Her diligent studies and natural good looks paid off when she landed a major role in the 2000 romantic dance film Center Stage with Peter Gallagher. The next year she found herself in the teen comedy/musical Get Over It beside Kirsten Dunst, Colin Hanks, Mila Kunis, Swoosie Kurtz, and Martin Short.
2002 provided more teen film fodder for Saldana. She appeared in films of varying success from Crossroads opposite Britney Spears to Drumline with Nick Cannon.
But, in 2003, Saldana received more exposure than she could have possibly hoped for by landing a role in the smash blockbuster hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Working beside some of Hollywood’s biggest names such as Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley, Saldana not only kept up, she garnered much praise and admiration.
In 2004, she showed no signs of slowing down when she took a role in the Steven Spielberg directed film The Terminal. Yet again, working with Hollywood ’s A-list did not faze this young starlet, even beside the likes of Tom Hanks, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Stanley Tucci. Impressing even these most seasoned of actors, Saldana walked away with even more ever-important connections.
Saldana’s roles continue to be varied but always earning her praise. She can be seen in comedies such as Guess Who with Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher as well as more serious minded film like Constellation with Billy Dee Williams and Temptation.
She completed filming 'After Sex 'and is in post-production for three other films.
With all the buzz and publicity surrounding Saldana, everyone should keep an eye on this rising star. If her previous work is any indication, she is headed for greatness. |
